Xenophobia causes death

Mats Bratterud Fernholt

People of the modern society have xenophobia. Many of the people around us have fear of people who in fact are just like us. Many fear or hate people only because they are from different nationalities or believe in a different religion.

Two mosques in New Zealand where attacked by a terrorist. One man killed 49 innocent people just because of their skin color and belief was different.

Xenophobia

Terrorism is about to get bigger and bigger because of immigration in different countries. The fear of strangers and other religions make people do horrible things. Take the terror attack in New Zealand for an example. One man killed 49 people in two different mosques. Later in court, the main suspect showed a sign meaning «white power.» This is why we need more campaigns when it comes to different colors, religion and sex.

Terror attack in New Zealand

The terrorist attack in New Zealand took place March 15th. 28-year old Brenton Tarrant ran into two mosques and killed a big amount of people. In his car the police found at least four weapons and some homemade bombs which they managed to disarm. This proves that he was planning to attack other mosques, but got caught. The weapons had names of different people written on them, among them was the Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik. Tarrant claimed that he has been in contact with the man even though he is in jail. Breivik´s lawyer said that it is nearly impossible since he only talks with some of the personnel.

Live

Brenton Tarrant streamed his terrorist attack live on Facebook. Even though it only lasted for around seventeen minutes, the police worked really hard to get it of the internet. Facebook had to delete around 1,5 million videos within 24 hours. The terrorist named a famous trend on the internet saying “Subscribe to Pewdiepie”. The police said he only did this to gain media attention.

The prime minister in New Zealand, Jacinda Arden, had forbidden weapons in the country not long before. She was in the Masjid Al Noor-mosque when the shooting started. She claimed that this was one of New Zealands darkest days and that her heart went out to the victims, families and friends.

Conclusion

Our conclusion is that bad focus on fear of different religions or skin color might be part of why this tragedy happened. It also might be that they have an easy access to weapon. The prime minister has just forbidden use of weapon in the country and not long after, a mass shooting happens that killed around fifty people. We need to be more open and accept that we’re all different, we look different and we believe in different things.
